tmj and headache treatment

Do you have regular headaches, jaw pain, or neck pain? Has your doctor been unable to treat these symptoms? If so, then you might have temporomandibular joint disorder (called TMJ or TMD). When this complex joint that links your head and jaw experiences problems it can cause a wide range of symptoms. Individually, doctors have a hard time diagnosing and treating these symptoms. However, once we realize that they are all part of the same disorder, treatment can be very successful.

To learn whether you have TMJ in Myrtle Beach, please call  today for an appointment with a neuromuscular dentist at Carolina Forest Cosmetic Dentistry.

TMJ Treatment Can Relieve Your Jaw Pain

TMJ/TMD is where Dr. Holladay spends the majority of his continuing education hours. He continues to read/study/discuss these cases with an active study club to provide his patients with optimized treatment plan. His training far exceeds most dentists who just tell you to wear a nightguard and it will magically fix everything. Please schedule a free consult to discuss your symptoms so Dr Holladay can make you pain free. We have several patients whose lives have completely changed and will be happy to tell you their story.

The temporomandibular joints are located near the ear, at the top of the lower jaw. These joints allow movement of your jaw. There are many potential causes of TMJ disorders, including injury, arthritis or habits such as grinding the teeth at night. These disorders may produce some of the following symptoms:

  • Ear aches
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Clicking or grating noises with jaw movement
  • Pain opening or closing the mouth
  • Limited movement of the jaw
  • Tingling of the hands/feet

Not all discomfort of the jaw is the result of a TMJ disorder. In many cases, stress causes the muscles in the jaw to tense, resulting in symptoms similar to those characteristic of a TMJ disorder.

Treatment

The necessary course of treatment depends on the specific diagnosis and severity of the damage to the joint. The most common method of treatment will be an orthotic. This is an appliance that is constructed to place your muscles, joints, and teeth in the correct position. We use a TENS device to help us locate the proper jaw position. The TENS device gently relaxes your muscles to allow your teeth and joints to align.

Orthotics are fashioned to fit your bite by taking an impression of your teeth. We send this impression to a leading dental lab, where skilled technicians will construct your custom appliance. Our team will use the TENS device before the impressions are taken and for each adjustment until you are pain-free. Second stage options will be discussed to keep you pain free.

Depending on the severity of your case, Dr. Holladay will discuss your options for treatment, probable outcomes, and help you arrive at the best choice for your oral health goals and lifestyle.
